Andrew Murphy recounts the extraordinary roller-coaster life of William Penn, the Quaker who founded Pennsylvania and its capital Philadelphia. Pen was in 1681 granted by Charles II, through the influence of his father, a charter to create a new American colony. This assigned to Penn’s ownership a huge swathe of land including what is now the state of Pennsylvania. Penn founded his new colony on the principle of freedom of religion - in contrast to European regimes and to other colonies in North America. He was a workaholic, drawing up a whole system of laws, and laying out the grid system of streets for Philadelphia. But he was swindled by his right hand man, and returned in poverty to England, where he died a pauper.

The reviewer of the book in the Friends Journal wrote: The many triumphs, tragedies, complications, and contradictions of this extraordinary life are explored in Andrew Murphy’s new biography, an exhaustive, well-written, and thoughtful work.;
