William (Bill) Gates (born 1955) is an American billionaire and co-founder of the software company Microsoft - one of the largest companies in the USA. The larrgest individual shareholder in Microsoft until 2014, he was a key player in the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s. He stepped down as chief executive officer of Microsoft in 2000, He is a noted philanthropist, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation being one of the largest private charities in the world. In 2020 Gates and his friend and fellow billionaire Warren Buffet founded the Giving Pledge under which they and other billionaires pledge to give at least half their wealth to charity.
The Economist wrote of Anupreet Das’ biography of Gates: ‘Ms Das considers different facets of Mr Gates’s life, from his friendship with Warren Buffett and the breakdown of his marriage to the running of his foundation and the management of his wealth. Some of this is eye-opening . . . But Ms Das’s book is most interesting when it shows how Mr Gates has influenced other billionaires – how they have emulated him, and how they have not’.
