AUGUSTINE THOMPSON
FRANCIS OF ASSISI: A NEW BIOGRAPHY (2012)
Saint Francis of Assisi (born about 1181) was the founder of the Franciscan religious order. He believed in leading a life of poverty, becoming an itinerant preacher and beggar. He is frequently pictured in a brown monk’s habit with a rope around his waist. On the rope are three knots, representing the three vows of obedience, chastity and poverty. He is linked with care for animals and the environment, and it became common for churches to arrange ceremonies for the blessing of animals on the fourth of October, his feast day. Francis called all animals ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ and is said to have preached tothe birds.
