Jeff Bezos was born in 1964; his father was 19, and his mother was a 17 year old high school student. His parents divorced when he was 17 months old, and his mother re-married a Cuban immigrant Mike Bezos, who adopted Jeff.

Bezos is the founder of Amazon - an American world leader in e-commerce and cloud computing. From 2017 to 2021 he was judged by Forbes as the richest person in the world. His wealth in November 2024 was estimated at $217 billion.

Bezos graduated from Princeton University in 1986 with degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. After working on Wall Street, he in 1986 founded Amazon, initially as an online book store. From that the company grew to an e-commerce website selling every type of consumer product. The company added an additional line of business providing cloud computing services, and has also become a leader in that field.

The Times described the book as: 'A masterclass in deeply researched investigative financial journalism . . . riveting'.
