Milton Friedman (born 1912) was a highly influential and Nobel Prize winning American economist, who was one of the leaders of the monetarist movement. Based at the University of Chicago, he and his fellow monetarists rejected Keynesianism in favour of monetarism until the mid 1970s. The monetarists argued that control of the money supply was the the key to the control of inflation. Friedman favoured a free market economic system, with very limited government involvement in social issues. In his 1962 book ‘Capitalism and Freedom’ Friedman advocated for a volunteer military, freely floating exchange rates, the abolition of medical licences, school vouchers, and drug liberalization.

Friedman was born in Brooklyn, New York City. His parents were working class immigrants from what is now Ukraine who worked as dry goods merchants. Friedman won a scholarship to Rugers University, the first of his family to go to university, and graduated in 1932. He embarked on an academic career at the Columbia University, the University of Chicago which he joined in 1946 after wartime economic work with the government. He worked there for the next thirty years.

Jennifer Burns has written an authoritative and nuanced life of Friedman, drawing on extensive historical sources. Foreign Affairs wrote in its review: ‘Burns’s book is not just a definitive biography of an influential economist but also an account of the development of economics as a discipline and a tool of public policy over the twentieth century.’
