Margaret Thatcher (born 1925) was a transformative and controversial British prime minister, who was leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest serving British prime minister of the twentieth century, serving from 1979 to 1990. Her father, an alderman and local Methodist preacher, owned and ran a tobacconist and grocery in Grantham, Lincolnshire. She attended the local grammar school, and won a scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford, where she read chemstry. After graduation she worked as a research chemist. She was elected as MP for the London constituency of Finchley in 1959. She was appointed to the front bench by Harold Macmillan in 1961. After the Conservatives went into opposition in 1964, Thatcher held various shadow ministerial posts. These included bing spokeswoman on housing and land, in which capacity she argued for the policy of giving council house tenants the right to buy their homes. When the Conservatives won the 1970 General Election, prime minister Edward Heath appointed Thatcher to the cabinet post of Secretary of State for Education and Science.

John Campbell (born 1947) is a distinguished and prolific biographer, whose subjects have included Lloyd George, F.E.Smith, Aneurin Bevan, Edward Heath and Margaret Thatcher. He was educated at Charterhouse and the University of Edinburgh, where he obtained his PhD in politics.
