Saladin, born to a Kurdish family in northern Iraq grew tp power in Egypt, founding a huge empire that reached from western Iraq to north Africa. At the height of his power, in 1187, he captured Jerusalem from the Crusaders, returning it to Islamic rule. Saladin was a complex character, who combined extraordinary powers of leadership with streaks of both justice and cruelty.

Jonathan Phillips is Professor of Crusading History at the Royal Holloway, University of London. He took his degree at Royal Holloway, and his PhD at the University of London. After teaching a the Universities of Southampton and York he returned to Royal Holloway to take up his present post.
