A biography not of Mao Tse Tung but of his legacy. Julia Lovell recounts the long influence of Mao - starting with his rise to power in north west China in teh 1930s, his extraordinary regime as ruler of the country, through to the worldwide influence of Maoism during the decades since he died. Lovel unfolds the emergence of Maoist movements from Peru, Tanzania, Cambodia, Nepal and India to Germany, Italy, Paris and Brixton. The Times described the book as ‘Revelatory and instructive … a beautifully written and accessible book’. Reviewing the book for the New Statesman, Andrew Marr described it as ‘wonderful’.
