Vladimir Putin (born 1952) has ruled Russia as either President or Prime Minister since 1999, making him the longest serving Soviet leader since Joseph Stalin. Putin had a career as a KGB intelligence officer for sixteen years, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He began his political career in St.Petersburg, moving to Moscow in 1996 to serve under President Boris Yeltsin. He was appointed Prime Minister in 1999 and became President after Yeltsin’s resignation.

Philip Short’s authoritative biography traces Putin’s career, examining the forces that shaped him and led him to challenge the American-led world order. The Guardian review described the book as: ‘Magisterial... based on access to a Who's Who of senior politicians, diplomats and intelligence sources.’
