Stephen Hawking (born 1942) was an immensely distinguished theoretical physicist and cosmologist. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Physics at University College, Oxford, and his PhD at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. From 1979 to 2009 he was the Lucasian Profesor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. In addition to his outstanding academic work he published books on physics and astronomy for a general audience, including his 1988 book ‘A Brief History of Time’. At the age of 21 Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease which over a period of years paralysed him. After losing his speech he was able to communicate through a speech-generating apparatus operated by a single cheek muscle.

Roger Highfield’s book describes Hawking’s life through the contents of his office which was, after his death, bequeathed to the Science Museum. Astronomer Royal Lord Rees wrote of the book: ‘In this unique book, Roger Highfield's clear expositions of Stephen Hawking's ideas are supplemented by fascinating illustrations that convey how he lived and worked.’
