Roger Lewis tells the larger than life story of Richard Burton - Welsh born twelfth sone of a coal miner and the greatest Shakespearean actor of his day - and the world famous film star Elizabeth Taylor. They came together on the set of the film Cleopatra, married, divorced, and married again. Their early marriage was a fantasy ideal of furs, yachts, vodka, jewels, and private jets. But it all went terribly wrong, with alcoholism and violent arguments. Burton’s turbulent life came to an end at the age of fifty eight. Taylor lived on, and died at the age of seventy nine. She had accumulated eight marriages to seven men, had suffered seral serious illnesses, and had converted to Judaism.

Roger Lewis’ biography of Burton and Taylor has been highly praised. Marina Hyde described it as an: ‘Absolute masterpiece … one of the great reading experiences of my life’. The Times wrote: ‘Lewis's magnum opus is a masterpiece in a genre of his own invention.’
