Henry VII (1457 - 1509) seized the throne of England and ruled until his death in 1509. He claimed te trhone through his mother, Margaret Baufort, who was a descendant of Edward III. Henry VII became King after 14 years of exile in Brittany. His forces, supported by those of France, Scotalnd and Wales, defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the last King of England to win his throne in battle. In a further victory he brought an end to the Wars of the Roses in 1487.

After ruled for nearly 24 years, Henry VII died peacefully in 1509 and was succeeded by his son Henry VIII. His reign saw many administrative, economic and diplomatic initiatives, including the important development of the wool industry.

The Financial Times described the book as: ‘Remarkable ... Penn brilliantly recreates the sterile atmosphere suffocating Henry's England. His eye for time, circumstance and the telling anecdote is keen. Winter King offers us the fullest, deepest, most compelling insight into the warped psychology of the Tudor dynasty's founder to have appeared since Bacon wrote.’
