Albert Einstein, born 1879) is widely regarded as the greatest scientist of the twentieth century. He is noted for developing the theory of relativity. He also made valuable contributions to quantum mechanics. He was awareded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for ‘his services to theoretical physics, and especially the discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.

Einstein was born in Germany, moving in 1895 to Switzerland in where he graduated in mathematics and physics. In 1903 he obtained a post at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern, and in 1905 he successfully submited his PhD thesis to the University of Zurich. In 1917 he became Director of the Whilhelm Institute for Physics in Berlin. It was while Einstein was visiting the USA in 1933 that Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. Horrified by Hitler’s persecution of the Jews, Einstein decided to stay in the USA and joined the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. The remained affiliated to the Institute for Advanced Study until his death in 1955.

Walter Isaacson’s career was as a journalist, editor, television executive, and author - with a specialism in biographies. His other biographees have included Henry Kissinger, Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, and Elon Musk. Isaacson attended Harvard, and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He was during his career the chief executive officer of the CNN television network, and the editor of Time magazine. He was also the chief executive officerof the policy studies think tank the Aspen Institute.
