Laura Cumming has been the art critic of the Observer since 1999. After studying literature at university she moved to London in her early twenties, working in publishing then in journalism. She has also published a highly regarded biography of the painter Velasquez. Brought up in Scotland, she is the daughter of the artists James Cumming and Betty Elston.
